A638 Dewsbury - Cleckheaton Sustainable Travel Corridor
Changes to the Dewsbury-Cleckheaton journey
Project overview
Kirklees Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority are working together to deliver major changes for the A638 Dewsbury-Cleckheaton corridor. The project is part of the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme. Kirklees Council has secured over £60m of this central government funding, with £12m allocated towards this corridor and £4m to the Heckmondwike bus hub.
A638 Dewsbury-Cleckheaton Sustainable Travel Corridor
Significant investment is planned along the A638 between Dewsbury and Cleckheaton. The project aims to improve journey times and experience for the users of this corridor, both on the main road and on the Spen Valley Greenway / Spen Ringway.
Bus priority treatments will be implemented along the corridor - enhancing bus reliability - together with new footways and crossings to help all prospective customers to access bus services. The scheme will also transform the continuity, safety and legibility of the cycle network through a set of on-street cycling upgrades and new and improved local links to Spen Valley Greenway / Spen Ringway, to maximise its usage, together with widening and lighting of the Greenway. This will help to create a holistic network to support everyday journeys, making cycling a mode of choice and providing high-value and active travel opportunities.
All plans are available on the comment link below.
Heckmondwike Bus Station
The TCF package will make the bus offer more attractive through upgrading the bus hub at Heckmondwike to a bus station. This aims to improve service capacity, customer experience and information provision at this important bus service crossroads. A safer and spacious waiting environment will provide for rising demand, reduce potential anti-social behaviour and help to regenerate the district centre.
