The story so far

The area is already a favourite of creatives and is home to an interesting and unique set of independent businesses, restaurants, shops, bars and coffee shops as well as the popular open market.

We want to build on this by promoting modern co-working spaces and studios within some of our historic buildings.

Key projects

The Post Office and Sorting Office

This site provides a fantastic opportunity to transform the building to create new homes. We will promote and support this as a key opportunity to showcase quality town centre living.

Market refurbishment

In August 2022, we submitted a bid for Levelling Up Funding to supporting restoration and refurbishment of the Grade II* market on Northumberland Street, as part of the Huddersfield Blueprint. This bid was submitted as part of Round 2 of the government's Levelling Up Fund bid process. The government later announced Levelling Up Funding had been awarded to this project as part of Round 3, in November 2023. We're working to update plans, and will be releasing new timelines and visuals for the work.

Co-working spaces

Existing buildings in the area could be converted into co-working spaces, attracting small and creative businesses. We will support this by providing facilities such as better digital connections.

St Peter's Gardens

We will support the enhancement of St Peter's area with refreshed planting, paths and benches so it's better used, and people can make the most of the green space.

Northumberland Street

Improvements will be made to make Northumberland Street more attractive and pedestrian-friendly and better link St George's Square to Southgate.
