Renew a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Driver's Licence
- You must complete a driver renewal application and email it to Email licensing@kirklees.gov.uk, along with all required supporting documents.
- You can do this up to three months prior to your renewal date to ensure your application is processed on time.
- Kirklees Council does not issue temporary licences.
- If your licence expires while your application is awaiting processing, you will be unable to work until your renewal has been granted.
Tax requirements
- Visit confirm your tax responsibilities when applying for a taxi, private hire or scrap metal licence and complete a tax check.
- Confirm when you submit your application that you have done this.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
You must undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and sign up to the DBS Update Service.
- Payment of £67.50 will be taken at the time of your renewal application submission.
- You will receive an email with a username and login details.
- You must log into your application, enter your personal details, and submit the form.
- Log back into your account to download your unique barcode and state which forms of ID (Passport, Driving Licence, Utility Bill etc) you will be providing for your ID check and submit your ID information. Included is a list of which Post Offices you can attend to have your ID documents checked
It may take up to 24 hours for your barcode to be available to download.
- You can then attend your chosen post office, to provide the barcode and the IDs you stated on your submission. Should you not provide an exact match of ID's, the post office will not perform the ID checking service. There is an additional fee of £12.75, for this service to be paid at the post office. You ONLY pay when the ID check is complete.
- You must log back into the form and complete the declarations & consents.
- You will receive your DBS in the post and must produce this to Licensing.
- You will be required to sign up to the Update Service, paying a fee of £16 up front and annually directly to the DBS.
Failure to sign up to the update service or pay the annual fee will result in the suspension of your licence.
How to renew
Fill in the application form and email it and supporting documents to Licensing.

- The completed renewal application form
- A photo of your DVLA driving licence - front and back
- A photo of your expired badge - front and back
- A screenshot or copy of your DVLA Check Code. You can get this from View or share your driving licence information
- A screenshot or copy of your Tax Check Code. For further guidance visit tax check
- Evidence of right to work
