Street works by utilities companies

Utility companies have a statutory right to undertake street works for installation and repairs and they are responsible for the correct signing and guarding of their works. They will usually have a courtesy board with the company name and contact details if you have anything to request or report.

Utilities companies must restore the street to its original condition within two years of completion, or three years if the excavation was over 1.5 metres deep.

Notice periods for street works

  • Emergency or urgent works = notice within 2 hours of starting work in the highway
  • Works duration of 11 or more working days = 3 months notice
  • Works duration of 4 to 10 working days = 10 working days notice
  • Works duration of up to 3 working days = 3 working days notice

Temporary traffic lights

Street works and roadworks with temporary traffic lights have a courtesy board placed by the developer carrying out the works which will include the company name and contact details if you have anything to report or request.

Alley gating

Alley gating is a crime prevention method that involves installing self-locking steel gates at the ends of alleyways, with responsibility for them falling on the surrounding homeowners.
