A tailored programme for schools and the community.

Kirklees Council believes that to minimise the amount of waste we produce and maximise recycling, we must all work together. A common and shared understanding of the waste hierarchy and our own roles and responsibilities within it is essential in the journey to achieve our zero waste ambitions.

In our Resources and Waste Strategy 2021-2030, we detail how clear, proactive, and ongoing communication and engagement with our residents, communities, and businesses is paramount to enable a sustained change in mindset. As such, our team undertakes outreach across Kirklees within schools, community groups, and at shows, to educate residents of all ages on reducing, reusing, and recycling.

"The workshops really get the children talking, sparking conversations about why we need to look after the environment

Schools

Climate change and sustainable waste management are multi-generational issues, and many of our young people are already passionate about what needs to change. By working with schools to develop and deliver meaningful educational resources, we will empower our children to make a difference both now and in the future.

Kirklees Council's Waste Strategy Team can provide your school with cross-curricular presentations and workshops for pupils that cover environmental issues, science, and geography. If your school is working toward eco-status, our sessions are a massive support toward application for the award.

Themed around recycling and waste management, our fun and interactive sessions are a big hit with the children and staff. We can provide presentations for assemblies, classroom workshops and outdoor activities - and they are all free!

Sessions include:

  • Educational recycling games and puzzles

  • Classroom workshops on recycling
  • Free presentations on wormeries and composting
  • Litter picks and presentations
