Green bins
All Kirklees residents can have a green bin for recyclables which is emptied every two weeks.
The materials are taken to our materials recycling facility in Huddersfield where they are sorted into individual material types and then they are sent to reprocessing plants to be made into new products. Sorting is done by a series of machines and by hand.
Find out what you can and cannot put in your green recycling bin.
Yes please
- books remove hardback covers first
- cardboard
- deodorant sticks
- drinks cans, food tins and empty aerosol cans
- junk mail and envelopes
- newspapers and magazines
- plastic bottles, including pop, milk, and cleaning product bottles (spray tops removed)
- Pots - such as yoghurt, soup and face cream pots
- telephone directories
- tubs, such as those for margarine, ice cream and laundry tablets
- trays, such as those for meat, ready meals and fruit and vegetable punnets
Make sure that your recycling is clean and dry before you put it into your green bin.
Place all items loosely in your green bin or green liner if you do not have wheeled bins. Don't put them in other bags.

These should not be put in your green bin or liner because they can't be dealt with at the recycling plant:
- batteries
- bagged waste or plastic carrier bags
- clothing and textiles
- drinks cartons (Tetrapak)
- dirty or greasy containers
- foil/foil trays
- food waste
- garden waste and wood
- gas cannisters
- glass
- nappies
- plastic film or cling film
- polystyrene including foam trays and cups
- shredded paper
- vape/vape cartridges
Some items that appear recyclable often aren't. If in doubt, leave it out!
