Tuesday 18 February 2025

There will be no representative from Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) on 18 February.

Council staff and partners provide a Welcome Club at Huddersfield Ukrainian Club. It provides support for people who have arrived from the Ukraine on a family visa and those who have arrived through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Drop-in sessions

Drop-in sessions are available on Tuesday.

People can have an initial discussion about how things are since arrival and see what support may be needed. Guidance may include how to:

  • access benefits - this will take a little time so it's important that they apply for this as soon as possible
  • access a bank account
  • apply for nursery, school and college places
  • register with a GP and dentist
  • learn English
  • progress towards employment when the time is right.

Please allow enough time when you visit as the drop-in sessions are often busy. You may need to wait for the service you wish to see. Alternatively you may wish to make an appointment and return at a later date.

Kirklees Libraries

Kirklees Libraries are available on the first Tuesday of every month.

  • Our Library team will promote our free 'Kirklees Library Offer' which is available across all our 24 libraries.
  • We can support individuals and families to sign up for a free library card, and chat to them about borrowing books from our huge collection of bilingual and diverse adult and children's books.
  • We also will have up to date information available about our numerous free activities for children and families across our libraries e.g. Lego clubs, coding clubs, craft clubs, rhymetime and storytime sessions.
  • We will also bring along free Bookstart packs and some fun activities for children who come along too.
  • Kirklees Libraries are committed and enthusiastic about people volunteering in our libraries and we can talk about the various opportunities available which is an amazing opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills.
  • We'll also promote activities for people with various interests, such as our Talk English classes, crafts, knitting, and sewing clubs, chess Clubs, book groups, and more!
  • Our Digital Inclusion Librarian will provide information on the digital resources available from Kirklees Libraries and help people access them. This includes completing applications for laptop loans from Digital Hubs and providing free SIM cards for individuals who struggle to access data/internet. We can also provide other digital assistance, such as signing people up for a MyKirklees account, other online accounts, and other IT assistance. We will promote Kirklees Libraries online resources such as the Libby and Pressreader apps or the practice Life in the UK test, and explain how to access and use them.
