Climate change
What to expect in the box
Read the books to understand more about nature, the environment and the impact of climate change.
Create your own story about the impact of climate change, or write your own book of advice on how to help the planet.

Use the puppets to discuss different wildlife in your local area. Think about how they are adapted to their habitats, what their ecosystem is, and their food chain. Create a play using the puppets discussing their own concerns about the climate crisis, and how people can help.

Use the net to catch bugs and study them up close in the jar. Be careful and ensure you return them to their natural habitat.
Can you explain why different insects are important in our ecosystem? How might climate change impact on them?

Use the rain gauge in different areas around the school area and record rainfall over a set period.
Research droughts and torrential rainfall, and consider how this links to climate change.
Use engineering skills to construct your own rain gauges.

Set up the camera trap in your school grounds and record wildlife activity.
Contribute to a Citizen Science project, such as the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch. Other projects can be found on the Wildlife Trust website.
Consider the impact of habitat loss, deforestation and climate change on your local wildlife.
Create houses and homes to help protect the wildlife you see.
Please do not use this house but use it to create your own insect house which you can place in the school grounds.
What types of insects might the different parts be for?
Why do insects need houses like this?
Why are insects important in the environment?

Research traditional energy and fuel, looking at its impact on the environment.
Research sustainable energy and think about the benefits and negatives of each type.

Study the different animals and think about different ways you can protect and help them.
Track these animals footprints in your school grounds.

Use the net to sweep through bushes and grass to safely catch insects.
Record the different types of insects you find, and ways to encourage more insects in your school grounds.

Use the compass to explore your school grounds or a local natural area. Look at maps of the area and think about how land use has changed over time.
What is the impact of changing land use for the ecosystem?
What is the compass made from? Research the impact of this material on the environment.

Research the use of plastic and why this is used to make objects.
What are the threats that this material pose to the environment?
What are the threats that this material pose tothe environment?

Research:
- Global warming
- Rising sea levels
- Rising temperatures
Consider what actions individuals, communities, governments and countries can take to help combat each issue.

Please do not use this house, but use it to inspire you in creating your own bird houses. Think about how you can adapt it for different birds.
Monitor how many birds visit your bird house, and research bird populations in your area.
